An Enterprise man was arrested after he led Daleville police on a dangerous high-speed chase that exceeded 100 mph on Saturday.

Daleville police Lt. Kenny Jackson said Kirkland Shaungh Devaughn, 32, was arrested after he allegedly tried to escape a roadblock at the intersection of Highway 134 and Dilly Branch Road.

The chase started a little after 3:40 p.m. after police conducting the checkpoint noticed the smell of marijuana coming from inside one of the vehicles.

Jackson said the suspect was pulled over to the side, but soon fled the checkpoint and led police on a high speed chase for about three or four miles.

During the chase, Jackson said, officers confirmed speeds up to 110 mph.

According to police, Devaughn eventually blew out the right front tire of his vehicle, struck a bridge on the roadway, bounced off a guardrail, traveled down an embankment and landed into the woods nearby.

The driver did escape the vehicle and officers said as they approached they noticed he was trying to get something out of the trunk. As officers were closing in on him Devaugh ran deeper into the woods and landed into a pond.

The suspect unable to swim was rescued from drowning by Daleville public safety officer Noah Suiter.

Jackson said police later found two ounces of marijuana, $3,200 in cash and an assortment of pills inside the vehicle.

Devaughn was booked into the Dale County Jail with no bond. He will later face charges for first-degree possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, attempting to elude police and driving under the influence.

In other crime, Belinda Brackins, 29, of Daleville, was arrested after police executed a search warrant at Green Tree Apartments in Daleville May 20.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., police conducted a search in apartment 217 and discovered 7.5 pounds of marijuana.

Brackins was booked into the Dale County Jail with no bond, and will later face charges for drug trafficking.
