A Dothan man is in Dale County Jail charged with first-degree theft of property.
Kevone Smith, 18, was arrested Aug. 5 in connection with a vehicle theft that occurred in Clayhatchee.
Dale County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Mason Bynum said that on Aug. 5 at approximately 4:30 p.m. Ozark-Dale County E911 received a call about an incident that had just occurred on East Main Street in Clayhatchee.
The victim had listed his vehicle for sale on Facebook’s Marketplace and was in the process of showing it to Smith when Smith jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to drive off, Bynum said. The victim was dragged for several feet as the suspect attempted to flee. The victim suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by Daleville Rescue.
A Houston County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the vehicle on West Main Street near John D. Odom Road in Dothan and attempted a traffic stop, Bynum said. A vehicle pursuit ensued and Smith crashed and fled on foot. The suspect was apprehended and turned over to the Dale County Sheriff’s Office.
Bynum credits the Houston County Sheriff’s Office and the Dothan Police Department for their assistance in this case as well as ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division, Daleville Rescue and the Dale/Geneva County District Attorney’s Office.
Additional charges are expected to be filed from the results of the pursuit and subsequent vehicle crash, according to Bynum.
