Bi-annual flag retirement held

The audience at the flag retirement bands together to help raise the new flag.

Sam Boswell Honda held its bi-annual flag retirement on Nov. 9 in honor of Veteran’s Day.

“We’re here today to celebrate our flag and what it represents and the fact that it represents—in my opinion—you guys and the selfless sacrifice you’ve made to our country,” O’Neal Boswell said.

Boswell also announced that the Wiregrass Wounded Veterans Committee recently received a pledge from the Bionic Warriors Association towards the addition of the floating dock at the Wounded Warrior Retreat By The Lake at Lake Tholocco on Fort Rucker.

He said it brings the total to nearly $32,000 and the organization needs $35,000-$40,000 to get the dock built.

Several veteran and community groups helped with the changing of the 30 by 50 ft. flag, including local Girl Scouts, Combat Motor Cycle Veterans, Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club, Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 6683, American Legion and Auxiliary, Wiregrass Wounded Veterans Committee and more.

A 13-fold ceremony was held for the removed flag before the group once again worked together to put up a new flag.

Each fold represents a different American and individual idea, including one for each parent of soldiers and veterans, the belief in God and His guidance, allegiance to the United States and more.
