“Exciting changes are coming to Fort Rucker Schools,” said Cindy Gibson, public affairs officer for the Department of Defense Education Activity-Americas. Those changes include brand new facilities and the combining of two current schools.

Gibson said, “Both the Fort Rucker Primary and Elementary schools need to be replaced, based on a Military Construction program, which began in fiscal year 2010, to replace aging Department of Defense Education Activity schools. Ultimately, the two schools will consolidate into a new 21st Century facility. Until then, DODEA Americas, Southeast District is preparing for that outcome.”

Gibson said a “new 21st Century School” will be constructed on the site where Fort Rucker Elementary School is currently located.

“This month the Corps of Engineers began work on the temporary site that will house grades three through six. The temporary site is a well-designed, high quality facility, which we are calling ‘The Village,’” said Dr. Vicki Gilmer, Fort Rucker Elementary School principal, in a release provided by Gibson.

“The Village will include state-of-the-art learning cottages, a full gym and outdoor play area, a media center, cafeteria, and much more, said Gibson. “ In August, the current Fort Rucker Elementary School will be razed and construction on the new 21st Century School will begin on that site. It will be a two-story, incredible environment that will house all students on Fort Rucker in grades Pre-K through sixth.”

In the release, Gilmer said, “The education and service to our students and families is our first priority. The temporary site provides evidence that we will be providing our great tradition of teaching and learning in a quality setting.”
