The New Brockton Lady Gamecocks (9-14-1) hosted the Daleville Lady Hawks (2-18) in the opening round of the Class 2A, Area 2 Softball Tournament on Wednesday, May 1 and the Lady Gamecocks won 18-4.
Daleville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Lady Gamecocks answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the first to take a 5-2 lead.
Neither team was able to score in the second inning and then Daleville scored two runs in the top of the third inning to cut New Brockton’s lead to 5-4. The Lady Gamecocks took complete control in the bottom of the third.
New Brockton scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning and then seven runs in the fourth inning to earn a resounding 18-4 win.
New Brockton earned 11 hits as a team with Kierstin Sunday, Bailey Blackmon, Lizzie Everts and Kennedy Hussey each earning two hits.
Shelby Hobbs, Mary Beth Smith and Madison Meeks had one hit each.
Sunday, Everts and Kinsley Owens scored three runs each and Anna Jones and Smith scored two runs each, while Paula McKenna, Blackmon, Undreya Chism, Hussey and Meeks scored one run each.
Stolen bases were also big for the Lady Gamecocks as Sunday stole four bases, Jones stole three and Owens stole two. Hobbs, McKenna, Chism and Smith each had one stolen base.
Harley Chinn pitched all five innings and allowed five hits and four runs, while striking out three batters in getting the win.
The Lady Hawks were led by Kinley Sykes at the plate, who went 2-for-2 with two runs. Krishauna Jackson, Nevaeh Pettway and Teconna White each had one hit, while Jackson and Pettway had one run each.
Jackson, Pettway, Sykes and Joycelyn Tinker each stole one base.
Alyssa Harris pitched four innings and gave up 11 hits and 18 runs while striking out three batters.
The Lady Gamecocks faced off against Geneva County in the second round and fell 15-5, while Daleville fell to Samson 16-7. Daleville’s loss eliminated the Lady Hawks from the tournament and put an end to the 2019 season for Daleville.
New Brockton will meet Samson on Thursday, May 2, at 3 p.m. in New Brockton with the winner of the matchup facing off against Geneva County at 5 p.m.
Geneva County has yet to suffer a loss in the double-elimination tournament, so if New Brockton defeats Samson the Lady Gamecocks will then have to beat Geneva County in back-to-back games to win the area crown.
