The Daleville Warhawks got off to a dominating start at the 14th Annual Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic with a 66-40 win over Ashford in the opening round on Thursday, Dec. 26.

The Warhawks heated up the Dothan Civic Center early on by jumping out to a 24-9 lead in the first quarter and then outscored Ashford 20-5 in the second quarter to practically put the game away at halftime leading 44-14.

Ashford kept things a bit more respectable in the second half, matching Daleville 14-14 in the third quarter and then outscoring the Warhawks 12-8 in the final period. Daleville still earned a dominant 66-40 win, however.

Daleville outrebounded Ashford 32-26 in the win and nine different Warhawks managed to score. In total Daleville knocked down 24-of-50 shot attempts and converted 9-of-13 free throws. The Daleville defense also forced 15 turnovers.

Sophomore Tomar Hobdy led the way for the Warhawks with 14 points along with two assists and two rebounds, while junior Peanut Bloodsaw chipped in with 12 points, two steals and three rebounds.

Both seniors Melvin Matthews and Robert Dees scored eight points each with Matthews bringing down nine rebounds and dishing two assists. Junior Sincere McKenzie also contributed seven points and junior Johnathan McFarlane scored six points.

Ashford was led by junior De’Christian Newton with 14 points and four steals. Junior Thomas Holston added nine points and four assists in the loss.

In other first round matchups, Carroll knocked off Dothan 57-56 in an exciting finish, Eufaula smothered Dale County 65-21, Providence Christian defeated Houston County 56-48, Barbour County handled Houston Academy 54-31, Rehobeth held on to beat Abbeville 80-71, Geneva defeated Wicksburg 62-59 and Enterprise beat Headland 67-55.

In the quarterfinals, Daleville rematched Carroll after falling to the Eagles 60-50 on Dec. 5. This time around Carroll was able to hold on to a 60-54 win to advance to the semifinals.

Early on it looked as if Carroll would run away with the game after jumping out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Warhawks managed to outscore the Eagles 9-5 in the final three minutes of the opening period to the cut the lead down to 18-9.

In the second quarter, Daleville played Carroll closer and went into halftime trailing 32-20.

In the third quarter, however, Daleville rallied and outscored Carroll 17-11 to cut the lead down to 43-37 headed into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Daleville managed to cut the lead to two points twice and tied the score late before Carroll was able to secure the 60-54 win with late free throws.

Daleville was led by McKenzie with 14 points in the loss, while Bloodsaw added 12 points, two steals and three rebounds.

Hobdy chipped in with 11 points and two assists. Sophomore Bryan Beckwith scored nine points as he knocked down 3-of-10 three-point attempts.

Other quarterfinal action saw Enterprise dominate Geneva 73-42, Barbour County outlast Rehobeth 76-70 and Eufaula thrash Providence Christian 65-22.
