Sincere McKenzie (15) and the Daleville running game will look to find more success against Wicksburg this week.

The Daleville Warhawks (1-0) come into this Friday night’s Class 2A, Region 2 matchup with the Wicksburg Panthers (0-0) hungry for a win.

Wicksburg has had Daleville’s number each of the last two years and scored 49 points on the Warhawks in each of those seasons.

“Wicksburg has beat us the last two years, so I expect them to come in expecting to beat us again,” Daleville coach Desmond Lett said. “With that said, we’re using that as motivation for our guys this week. We want to break that streak that they’re on.”

The Panthers did not play a regular season game last week but competed in a jamboree with Kinston and Goshen.

“We expect (to see) a hard-nosed Wicksburg team that comes in and plays hard,” Lett said. “We have to be ready to play our game and stay within our game. If we do that I think we’ll be fine.

“We have to execute, though. That’s the big thing. I’ve been telling (the players) that. We have to believe in ourselves first off and then we have to do the small things correctly, perfect our game and not play into their game. We also have to capatlize on their mistakes and limit our mistakes.”

Daleville senior running back Jalen White is coming off of a 289-yard, four touchdown performance last week and the Panthers will likely see a steady dose of White this week, as well. In the past three games – dating back to the first round of the 2018 playoffs – White has rushed for 805 yards and nine touchdowns.

In 2018, Wicksburg defeated Daleville 49-20 and then lost their next three games before going on a 6-game winning streak to close out the regular season and earn a spot in the playoffs.

Wicksburg hosted a three-team jamboree last week that saw Goshen and Kinston alternating possessions against Wicksburg. The Goshen/Kinston tandem ended up winning the jamboree – which doesn’t count as it was just a preseason matchup – by a score of 17-16.

Daleville and Wicksburg will meet at 7 p.m. in Warhawk Stadium in Daleville on Aug. 30.
