Ozark police officer shot

An Ozark police officer remains hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting that occurred Thursday, Dec. 12.

According to Ozark Police Chief Marlos Walker, the shooting occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. after OPD officers responded to a call at the 100 block of Briar Hill Court in Ozark.

Walker said an officer observed a white man walking on the roadway holding a firearm and exited his patrol vehicle.

“The male immediately began shooting at the officer, striking the officer and his vehicle multiple times,” Walker said. “The officer and additional responding officers returned fire and the male was killed by law enforcement gunfire. The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.”

Walker said he has requested an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigation comprehensive independent investigation in accordance with standard procedure regarding officer involved shootings.

“SBI agents immediately responded to Ozark and are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation,” Walker said. “The SBI is the lead investigating agency in this incident. Once completed, a copy of the investigation will be turned over to the Dale County District Attorney.”
