After an opening round loss to New Brockton in the Class 2A, Area 2 Tournament, the Daleville Lady Hawks faced elimination against the Samson Lady Tigers on May 2 and ultimately fell 18-7.
Samson started out hot and heavy with four runs in the first inning, five in the second inning, one in the third inning and two in the fourth inning to take a 12-0 lead going into the fifth inning.
The Lady Hawks finally got on the board when Alyssa Straw stole home in the top of the fifth inning. Kinley Sykes then stole home to reduce the lead to 12-2 before Aneena Reynolds drove home Krishauna Jackson, Nevaeh Pettway and Haley Jones on a hard ground ball single into right field to cut the lead to 12-5.
Samson extended its lead to 13-5 in the bottom of the fifth and then the Lady Hawks answered with two more runs to cut the lead to 13-7 in the top of the sixth.
Samson scored three more runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to cruise to a 18-7 win.
Reynolds, Pettway, Jackson, Sykes and Jamie Peters each had one hit. Sykes scored two runs while Straw, Alana Gordon, Jackson, Pettway and Jones scored one run each. Reynolds also had three RBIs and Jackson had two.
Straw stole three bases while Jones, Pettway and Sykes each stole two bases. Reynolds, Gordon and Alyssa Harris had one steal each.
Harris pitched all seven innings and struck out five batters, while giving 16 hits and 18 runs.
